How to communicate with people in psychological distress
1. Pay attention to the people around you and notice how they feel
2. Make contact to someone who appears to be in distress or who might be struggling with mental health issues.
3. Ask how they are doing, what is going on in their life, and show genuine interest in their concerns.
4. Listen. Don't worry about not being able to give advice; just be an attentive and patient listener.
5. Show understanding, don't say ‚it's nothing‘. Saying ‚you look exhausted, it must be difficult for you‘ is fine.
6. Offer professional help. Seeking advice from a psychologist or doctor requires courage and energy, which those who are unwell may not always have. They need your support to take the first step.
